Mental Health Counselor

Wabash College invites applications for the position of part-time Mental Health Counselor. The counselor will provide one-on-one counseling sessions to Wabash students for up to 25 hours per week; the counseling schedule will be coordinated with the Director of the Counseling Center. The part-time Mental Health Counselor will practice within the scope of his/her training and will recognize when to seek a higher level of care for the client.

This is a 10-month position (August-May, i.e. the academic year) at a competitive hourly rate commensurate with experience.

Qualifications:

  • 3-5 years’ experience in counseling.
  • Master’s degree in counseling, psychology, or related field.
  • Valid licensure with the Indiana Professional Licensing Agency (IPLA) in mental health, clinical addictions, marriage and family, or social work from the State of Indiana.
  • Experience with college-aged students and an understanding of their psychological and stage of life development is preferred.
  • Experience with crisis situations; suicidal and psychotic students; substance abuse disorders.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Provide direct services/counseling within the scope of training and licensure.
  • Collaborate with the Director of Counseling to coordinate office hours, maintain protocols for record management and retention, and adhere to legal and ethical professional guidelines.
  • Respond promptly to student requests for services and appointments.
  • Assess student clients with regard to presenting symptoms, including risk assessment for depression and suicidal ideation or self-harm.
  • Work with student clients to develop treatment plans and skills and strategies for improved functioning.
  • Prepare and maintain paperwork in accordance with professional guidelines; maintain confidentiality of records in accordance with the legal guidelines.
  • Maintain licensures, continuing education, and malpractice insurance.
  • Collaborate with other college staff including the Associate Dean of Student Engagement and Success, the Dean of Students, the Associate Dean of Students, the Director of Safety and Security, the Student Health Center staff, and other support staff as required to provide the optimal opportunity for student success.
  • Attend staff meetings as requested by the Director of the Counseling Center or other supervisors.
